Building
A Living Modern Monument
Since 1976, the Athens Conservatoire has been housed in central Athens, in the iconic building designed by the distinguished Greek architect and “student” of the Bauhaus movement, Ioannis Despotopoulos.
It represents the architect's principal work in Athens, and the sole realisation from his ambitious 1950s grand plan to create an Athens Cultural Centre.
The building stands today as one of the most significant architectural exemplars of the modernist movement in Greece and is the subject of numerous academic studies and scholarly research, whilst serving as a source of admiration for visitors and city residents alike.
In 2017, the building was officially designated as a 'Modern Monument' by the Central Council for Modern Monuments of the Greek Ministry of Culture, fulfilling a longstanding aspiration of the country's architectural community.
An Arts Centre in the Heart of Athens
The Athens Conservatoire complex comprises a ground floor, first floor and basement levels. It encompasses a distinctive combination of multiple spaces for the teaching of music, theatre, and dance, alongside a library, several halls for artistic performances and gatherings, atria, and recording studios.
Since 2022, when a substantial part of the building was fully renovated and modernised, whilst fully respecting the architect's vision, the Athens Conservatoire Arts Centre has established itself as a landmark destination: a hub for contemporary artistic and cultural events.
